Traverse City

Part of Grand Traverse County, Traverse City is home to over 75,000 residents. Pristine rivers, lakes and bays are nestled into wooded hillsides, offering spectacular beauty and diverse recreational opportunities that appeal to all age groups. For retirees or young families seeking a wholesome lifestyle in a healthy and safe environment, Northern Michigan brings a wealth of opportunity. Agriculture continues to be a large part of the city’s economy. However, there is a strong trend toward tourism as word of the vast, beautiful landscapes, clear water, world-class golf courses, sand dunes, and charming villas spreads amongst the ears of others.

Traverse City is home of the National Cherry Festival, an annual event that started in 1926. At least 500,000 people from all areas, local and abroad, enjoy the eight-day festival that boasts some 150 events, the majority of them being free. The event is a sure sign of community involvement, Traverse City’s prominence in the cherry industry, and a celebration of the region’s diverse culture. USA Today voted the Cherry Festival as one of the Nation’s Top 10 Events three years in a row.

For the outdoor enthusiast, Traverse City has much to offer in the way of recreation including biking, boating, canoeing/kayaking, fishing, golfing (Michigan is ranked second nationally in number of golf courses per capita), paragliding/parasailing, snowmobiling, skiing (be it Mount Holiday or the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa), and more.

The arts are available and plentiful in the Traverse City area. Whether it is a wine festival, a polka festival, museums, or another unique appetite, Traverse City will satisfy your intellectual, social, and food palate. Interlochen Center for the Arts, home to the Interlochen Arts Camp, is considered the country's premier site for young musicians, dancers, actors, visual artists, and writers to explore and develop their talents. The Center has produced more Presidential Scholars in the Arts than any other high school in the nation. Each year, the Interlochen Arts Festival presents more than 750 concerts and exhibits by students, faculty, and the nation's paramount artists. The beautiful campus lies on 1,200 acres, surrounded by glacial lakes and pines. Attracting more than 265,200 visitors to its campus each year—whether or not future enrollment is an interest—Interlochen is a must see.

Traverse City Area Public Schools have an exceptional reputation with multiple award-winning programs. Traverse City also offers several quality private and parochial schools, including Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools, Grand Traverse Academy, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Leelanau School, The Living God Christian School, Montessori Children's House & Elementary School, and Traverse City Christian High School just to name a few. Higher education opportunities are plentiful starting with Northwestern Michigan College offering many quality courses as well as advanced degree studies through extension programs from nearby universities, including Ferris State University, Davenport Business College, Michigan State University, Lake Superior State, among others.

At the core of the Northwest Michigan region's health system is Traverse City’s Munson Medical Center. Munson is the largest hospital in northern Michigan, and the regional referral center for the treatment of many specialized health problems. The region's largest medical staff meets the varying needs of Traverse City, a place that many of them like to call “home.”

There seems to be no downside to Traverse City. With your view of choice, affordable housing, and amenities aplenty, Traverse City awaits you.
